Question

Why am I getting Complete your nonresident return first alert when I completed nonresident return first?

Work in MO, live in IL. 100% income from MO. As in previous years I finish Federal return, then MO, then IL. TT says IL return looks great but when I go to do final complete check I get a warning saying to complete my nonresident return first?

The reason you are encouraged to complete your non-resident return first is you need the income tax figure from that state to calculate the credit for taxes paid to another state on your resident state tax return. I suggest you review that entry on your Missouri tax return to make sure it is correct before you file your tax return.

I have the same situation and I have reviewed it several times.

I have to ask some obvious questions.

1. What are the two states?

2. Which state is your resident state?

3. What version of TurboTax are you using (Online or CD/download)? If the latter, Windows or Mac?

4. Where are you getting this alert "Complete your nonresident return first"? In the federal review? In the state review? Someplace else?

5. In your nonresident state, did you go all the way to the end of the state interview until you are returned back to the screen from which you entered the state interview?

I did the nonresident first (Missouri). After it checked it, Turbotax indicated it was complete. After that, I went to my home state of Illinois.  I noticed that it said something about Missouri after I completed Illinois. Turbotax would not allow me to add the credit for the local taxes (St. Louis) paid to the other state taxes and after I completed it, it indicated I could not submit it electronically because of issues. After this and other things in the Federal Return, which were needlessly complicated, I gave up with Turbotax.

having the same problem - gone thru the state returns a couple time - no error and no unanswered questions.  TT has flaws, and they provide ZERO support - except for extra fees...to fix their errors.

Turbotax told me I would need to submit a paper copy because things were incorrect. I assume, they would till charge the same amount. After spending many, many hours on this and other issues, I bailed and went to a different online tax company and completed it in an hour. I have used Turbotax for several years but they have made some things more complex than they need to be.
