Why am I paying state in 23. I always get a refund.

I owe State in 2023. Haven’t before. Why ?

No one in the user forum can see your tax return.  The usual reason for owing the state is not having enough state tax withheld from your paychecks.  Double check the amounts you entered from any W-2 boxes 16 and 17 and make sure it was all entered correctly.  Print out 2022 and 2023 state returns and compare them line by line next to each other to see what is different.

 

 

If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2024.

 

 

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
