Question

Why am I paying state tax if I didn’t work in Maine and don’t live there?

To have the mistaken Maine withholding refunded, you would need to file a nonresident Maine return showing $0 in income.

It may be necessary to mail in the return if the return is rejected for Electronic Filing.

Maine may ask for proof that you did not work in Maine and proof of your residency outside of Maine.

The income will still be taxable in your state of residence, so you may want to consider speaking to your employer about no longer withholding taxes for Maine and withholding for your state of residence instead.
