I'm filing MFJ on my Federal & Maryland return. But must file MFS for my Virginia return. Can I still deduct an IRA contribution on the Virginia return?  My husband passed away 1/15/19 when we were still living in Maryland.  He was an active employee at that time and received 2 paychecks in January of 2019.  He did pay into his 401k in those paychecks.  I moved to Virginia at the end of March 2019.   I qualify to pay into my IRA on the MFJ return, but not on the MFS return for Virginia. This doesn't seem correct, since I'm able on the MFJ return.  Help!?

    Sorry for your loss.

If you made the IRA contributions while in Maryland, they would be included in your Maryland Part-Year Return.

Many states start with the Federal AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) amount, which already included any deductions for IRA contributions, so you would not need to enter them again in your State Returns (unless asked in the State interview).
