Why do I have to pay California State Tax when I lived in Alaska, and did not work in California?

If you had no income from California, you don't have any taxes to pay there.  However, if you moved from California in the year, and you have previously filed a tax return for California, you might want to file a California part-year tax return with an income allocation of zero for California.  This way, California is advised of your move and does not look for tax on income that should not be taxed there.

(You may not technically have to do this, because you don't have income to claim for California, but since you moved to a state with no income tax, this can assure California to not come after you for tax on income they shouldn't tax).

Do you have rental or any other income that might be coming from California?  Or do you have California taxes being taken out on a W2?
