Question

Why do I owe state taxes where I was a resident but did not earn any money in that state?

It would depend on the state - but in general, you are assessed taxes in the state you live in even if you earn the money in other states. You will often get a credit for taxes assessed by other states but it may not cancel out the full amount of tax assessed by the state you live in.
