Question

Why does review of NY return say "return claims a Solar and Wind energy credit carryover" when there is none on the return?

Turbo tax is saying a solar and wind energy credit carryover exists when it doesn't - so it says the only way to file is to print return.  Seem wrong.  I don't even own a home.

See if there is a New York Form IT-255 Claim for Solar Energy System Equipment Credit in the list of forms that can be deleted.  If so, then delete the form and see if the problem remains.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen

Click on Tools

Click on Delete a form

There is no Form IT-255 in forms list...??

Any other ideas?

The only other thing you can do is to carefully go through each section of the New York state return and see if there are any areas that ask about a Solar Credit or a Solar Credit Carryover to see if there is an amount entered.

I have solved how to resolve this issue.  You can delete/start over your NY return after verifying that you have selected "NO" on the Federal for the energy credit.  Deleting & redoing the NY return will clear out this error

Same thing happened to me too. After researching online, the shared solution found here on TurboTax that another user posted also solved my issue. Basically, remove the energy reference carry-over line item in the Federal portion, then, you must delete the State (in my case NY), then added NY State to file. I'm happy to say this allowed me to e-file both Federal and NYS together. No way was I going to mail my NYS return.

For NY Residents using the downloaded TT Deluxe Software, I solved the problem by:

1) Click on the Forms icon in the upper right-hand corner

2) Scroll to the line Tax/Credit Wks and open

3) Scroll to line 26 (Solar and Wind Energy Credit carryover)

4) Delete the (0) that was automatically populated in the field

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Turbo Team,

This is system glitch for sure, I am trying again and again unable to fix the issue.

Why we paying you for charges, just to smooth filling, not terrible.

Can you fix the issue and confirm back ASAP

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open your return by selecting Continue or Pick up where you left off
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form

Clear cache and cookies:

Your browser stores recently visited webpages as temporary files in a cache, which enables the pages to load more quickly when revisited.

However, a full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

Here are the official instructions for the most popular browsers:

Apple's official support site doesn't appear to contain instructions for clearing the cache in Safari. Your best bet is to search the Internet for clear Safari cache or similar search terms.

This problem happened to me as well. Looked over and changed all Federal and State questions referring to Solar and Wind Energy and came up with the same notice not allowing me to E-File. Was worried because I already filed Federal and paid the fee so the option "Clear and Start" on the Tools bar wont work. But I just went back to Federal and a question of Solar Equipment installation was changed to no and continued to a already filed State page. From there deleted the Current State bar and redid the State Filing. Problem Fixed and was able to E-File. Good Luck.

@LF55 Thanks so much for your help! I was able to fix the Federal solar question and thought this would solve the problem but it didn't. I was terrified to delete the whole state return but I did and it worked! It was also a good reminder for me to look at everything carefully and NOT enter any additional information (like zeroes) in the rest of my forms. I appreciate your insight.
