There is nothing unusual about this scenario. To ensure everything is accurate, review these best practices and if you have done them, you can be confident the RI State Return is calculating correctly:

  1. Complete your non-resident return first. This means you should do your Massachusetts return first, since you do not live in Massachusetts.
  2. Complete your resident return next. This would be your RI return. Within the RI return, make sure you are claiming a credit for any taxes paid to MA.

A lot of times customers will reach out because they do their resident state first and forget to claim taxes paid to another state. Remember, you do not need to pay tax twice on the same income.

Accordingly, the fact that your RI return is showing $0 leads me to believe that you have correctly claimed the deduction for any taxes you paid to Massachusetts, your non-resident state to which your income is sourced.
