Question

Why is TurboTax forcing a WA state filing

I live in WA and we do not have income tax and do not have to file WA income tax.  Why is TurboTax blocking me from e-filing federal because I require state?  And you can not remove the state option.

You probable have the Washington state Working Families Tax Credit Application in your tax return files.

Click on Forms in the upper right of the desktop program screen.  When in Forms mode see if that form is listed on the left side of the screen, should be near or at the bottom.  If it is listed then click on it to open.  Then click on Delete form at the bottom of the page.  Go back to the interview and see if you are still have this issue.

No WA forms listed.  I am using Home and Business.

@Necromonkey Thank you for that screen shot.  This is not making any sense.

When you are in Forms mode click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen.  Is there an option to Remove state return?

If not then your only other option is to contact TurboTax support so this issue can be taken to the developers to get fixed.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for contacting support - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/account-management/turbotax-phone-number/L0Od33nMQ_US_en_US?uid=lfgviwbm

None of the replies here fix the probem.  I have the desktop version of a return I completed online.  When I go to open my file, it forces me to choose a state.  Without choosing a state, the file won't load and the proram hangs.  When I choose Washington, it says 'forms not available', and then stops responding.  Washington has no state tax and I don't need any forms.  Please fix this so I can open my file and finish this.

Had the same problem,

1) Open your file where it is stored on your computer.  This will bring you to the "Continue" button.

2) Go to State and hit "done with States".

3) When you get to the page where you tell them to "electronically" file hit "yes".  Right under that is another question about filing State Tax electronically.  HIT "NO".

That should do it.

Well I did call TurboTax Support, and got very frustrated as they needed to talk to my husband to confirm they could talk to me.  I do all the Turbo taxes for past 10 years by myself, and my husband does not even know how to get into the program. not sure why HE IS the 1st person on my account, when I am the payer and user of the programs for the past 10 years.

Next Turbo tax needs to fix their program for NO INCOME TAX States, so you don't need to do a State return in order to electronically file your Federal Income Taxes.  Never happened before this year. Some smart programmer has messed this up so anyone who is in a NO INCOME TAX STATE, can't even file their federal returns.

Oh and lastly, don't swear when you get frustrated (they could not even find me in their accts), so when you talk to TurboTax Support or they will end the call or won't help you even after asking for their supervisor.  So now I AM on the "naughty list" at Turbo Tax, ha, ha.

Cannot delete WA STATE from turbo tax if you work in WA state.  Says can't file Federal tax return until WA State is updated on Feb 6th.  Also I called Turbo Tax Support, and they were more worried about who I am, than helping me. After having to get my husband to approve of them talking to me, I got pretty upset and swore a bit because I have been the payer and user of Turbor Tax for over 10 years, yet my recent husband of 6 years had to confirm I could talk to them.  This is just Wrong. My email and phone number is on the account, but for some reason my husband's name shows up first probably from our Jt payment Acct, so they need him to confirm.  This is just WRONG on so many levels.  They stopped the conversation because I swore, so do Senators swear and lose their jobs over their swearing.  What about MTG - she swears hourly!

Nice to know it's not me and it's a software glitch. When I try to file my federal taxes, I keep getting the "I know you don't want to hear this, but we can't e-file."  "You need to submit your state forms for Washington state." OFFS. I am soooo annoyed. I don't even want to TRY calling them based on the other comments here. I, too, am using the personal/business federal/state software as I have a small amount of California income. NEVER has this ever happened. TT, you need to fix this!

I'm having this problem too. We live in another state (which has a state income tax), and we also own a farm property in Washington state that generates some income for us. We've filed our federal and home state taxes using TurboTax for over 20 years with this same situation, and never had to file a WA state tax form. Nothing is different this year, except that now TT is trying to force us to file a WA state tax form in addition to our home state's form.

Yesterday I completed our federal and (home) state taxes and tried to file electronically, but was stymied by the WA tax form situation. I found this message chain, which at least reassured me that others are facing the same glitch. But none of the proposed solutions in these replies have worked for me.

Today is February 7, and the problem hasn't yet been corrected, although one of the commenters mentioned something about a form that was supposed to be uploaded on February 6. I think I'll wait a few days to see if this gets resolved, but I'll continue to monitor this forum. And if all else fails, when I'm in a calm, rational mood I'll try calling TT support!

Agreed about still a problem on Feb.7. Downloaded and no updates to be found. Stopped the process after transfer from last years information. Wish Intuit would post a comment.

I had this issue too.  The instructions to cancel state return don't work.  That option is greyed out.

However, I found I could go ahead and efile the federal return.  I had to lie to TurboTax and say that I would file the state return manually.

Update that it it now Feb. 16 and the problem with WA State Income Tax return in TTax remains.  I am able to print out my federal return and plan to mail it.  I plan to ignore the State return. When it prints my 2025 1040ES payment vouchers, though, "DO NOT FILE, FORM NOT FINAL" is printed over them so they can't be used. This is due to the "error"  that I'm not done because haven't finished my WA State return.  I will use blank ones from the IRS.  I've tried several fixes mentioned by others elsewhere that didn't work.  You can select "Remove State Return" on a drop down menu, but it doesn't remove it.  I can't locate the Washington Family Tax Credit form when in forms mode to delete it.  So I'm done, but disappointed based on how much the program costs.

February 17, 2025

I hadn't noticed that on the 1040ES vouchers.  But I use the IRS eFTPS website to file my estimates.  I have a consulting business and never know how much I should pay until the ends of quarters.  Once set up, eFTPS is really convenient.  Since you can't use the printed vouchers, check it out.

I just got notice that my eFiled return was accepted by the IRS.  So no SNAFU was created federally by my "unfiled" state return.

I am in software.  I can understand how a bug like this should creep into Turbutax.  But don't they test this stuff?  No QA!  And this bug will certainly affect thousands of WA taxpayers.  Where is the firefighting team swooping in to resolve the issue?  All we get are trite solutions like "Click the Cancel State Return button"  when the button is greyed out because we have never created a state return.

Turbotax, are you monitoring these threads?  You do updates almost every day.  When are you going to take this issue seriously?

The workaround is to go ahead and file for the Washington credit.  TurboTax then comes back and tells you that you are ineligible for the credit (duh!).  I had to fill in today's date for the filing date (usually TT fills that in for you).  Anyway, it then let me e-file the federal form.

Intuit Software really screwed up on this one.  25 lashes with a wet noodle for the IT test team at Intuit.

February 24, 2025

Seeing this as well - I have no "Working Families Tax Credit Application" to delete.

I tried downloading the WA form, said I didn't want to try Working Families Tax Credit Application, and get a download error. Try to file, and I get a error about a missing WA form(s).

ETA on a fix for this?
