Question

Why was Line 56 on the last 3 years of my NJ State Return left blank?

Line 56 is labeled Property Tax Credit. According to the instructions, I am eligible for this credit. It was left blank on my NJ Return from 2022, 2021 & 2020.

On Form NJ-1040 is there a property tax deduction on line 40 for 2020 and 2021, or on line 41 for 2022? You get either the deduction or the credit, not both. You get whichever makes your tax lower.

Thanks for the reply. Besides Line 56 being empty, on 2022, Line 41 is also empty. On 2021 & 2020 Line 40 is also empty.

I am a Low Income Senior Citizen, I have $0 NJ Gross Income and $0 NJ Income Tax for all 3 years. I file a Tax Return because I make a small amount from Self-Employment and I receive Retirement Benefits.

Did you live in New Jersey all year in 2020, 2021, and 2022?

Were you 65 or older at the end of 2020?

Did you own your home or did you rent?

If you owned your home, was it a single-family home? Were you the only owner? Did you pay the property tax (real estate tax) each year? How much property tax did you pay each year? Are you a disabled veteran with a full exemption from property taxes on your main home?

If you rented, how much rent did you pay each year? Does the owner of the property pay property tax? Did anyone else share the rent with you?
