UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019
You shouldn't even be asked about school districts if you're filing a nonresident return. It sounds like some wires got crossed. Here are the steps to solve your situation:
- Make sure your personal information indicates that you are a resident of any state other than Wisconsin. [Click My Info on the black bar on the side.]
- Click State in the black bar or Your State Returns tab at the top of your screen.
- On the Status of your state returns screen, delete ALL state returns you may have in your return. [They will mostly repopulate from information in your federal return.]
- Prepare the WI nonresident return FIRST.
- On the screen, Did you make money in Wisconsin in 2019, but never live there? Answer Yes
- On the Residency Questionnaire, make sure the button is marked for Nonresident of Wisconsin for all of 2019.
- Enter your resident state on the next screen.
- Continue through the WI return. You should not be asked about School Districts.
