Question

Will money earned in Puerto Rico during hurricane relief be listed as earnings in another state? We live and work in SC.

On a 1099-misc

No, it will not be listed as another state tax  (PR is a US Possession but you do not need to report it as such unless there was PR tax withheld).  As a resident of SC, you will need to pay SC state tax, as well as federal tax on this income, but not Puerto Rico tax.

If it is self-employment income, you will need to list it with other 1099-MISC income.

If not, please use the following to report it:

  • Click Federal Taxes -> Wages & Income and scroll down to Less Common Income
  • Go to the last selection, Miscellaneous Income and click Start
  • Go to the last option, Other reportable income and click Start
  • When it asks, "Any other reportable income?" say yes and then type in a description and the amount to report it on your tax return.
