Question

Will TurboTax handle two periods of residency in the same state?

Hey everyone,

I filed with TurboTax last year and I really liked the experience and want to use it again this year. My situation is a bit more complicated this year though. I began the year as a California resident, moved internationally for about 6 months (with the intention of living there permanently), and then decided to move back to California due to personal circumstances. I know that Turbotax can handle multiple states and foreign income, however, can it handle my case where I had two separate periods of being a resident in the same state? If not, can I just adjust the form on my own or is this a situation where I should just use an accountant?

Thank you

Yes. You can adjust the form on your own. TurboTax does not handle "sandwich" residencies because the state tax forms are not set up that way.

As long as you total days present in California match up with the number of days on the form, things will work fine.

Since you moved back and ended the year the California, I would work backwards from the end of the year, but you can do it however you like.
