WV Income Tax

My son is a FT college student.  He earned income (22K) and has W2s from AL and GA but is a WV resident.  He did not earn any income in WV.  It appears he owes $19 to WV.   Is that correct?

It depends. If his W-2's from AL and GA withheld state taxes and he was under the filing threshold, these returns should still be filed for a state tax refund. That money will then go toward the state of residency. TurboTax will handle all of this. Click this article to confirm your input process in TurboTax for filing nonresident state returns.

If you are claiming him as a dependent, then he cannot claim himself. Instead of $2,000, he would have $500 on line 6.

He will need Schedule E, beginning on page 26, to claim e a credit for income taxes paid to another state if the rate of tax is higher than the tax rate in West Virginia.
