To get started, enter your military W-2 and verify your military rank when prompted within your chosen TurboTax Online product (Free Edition, Deluxe, Premier, Self-Employed). Your discount will automatically be applied when you file.

TurboTax Online (Free Edition, Deluxe, Premier, Self-Employed) is free for enlisted active duty military and reserve personnel.

See these pages for more info on the military discount for TurboTax and who is eligible for the Free Military Discount.

Active military could use the TurboTax online editions for free for tax year 2020.  It is assumed that the same will be true for tax year 2021.  The TurboTax online editions for tax year 2021 should be available in early December.

See this TurboTax website for the military - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/military-edition.jsp

Do you have to be active duty at time of redemption of the discount, for the entire tax year, or can you claim it if active duty for only a partial tax year?

Separated near the end of 2021 so I'm currently a veteran, but was eligible throughout the tax year for all but a few weeks, will I still be able to claim the discount?

I am currently filing my taxes using TurboTax Deluxe.  I am Active Duty Military.  After I entered my military W-2 info ( and I am enlisted)  I qualify for free service.  I am now at the end after entering ALL of my info  and now it's saying I got a discount.  TurboTax Deluxe originally $59 now $39. CA tax return originally $49 now $39.   I thought it was free which is why used this service.  All my stuff is basic, W-2s, Bank Interest and Unemployment.  Please help some guidance would be appreciated.

Go back to My Info on the left side of the online program screen.  Edit your personal info.  Make sure that you have selected I am a member or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces (active, reserve or National Guard).

I did that and it still wants me to pay $78.00

It didn't give us an option to do the free version.  Can we be reimbursed?

March 13, 2022

Yes, you can receive a free file version if you are currently enlisted in the military or reserve personnel. Make sure you answer in the "My Information" section, your current active military rank and all questions asked in that area. Also make sure you indicate that your W-2 is "Active Duty Military Pay" so your discount will be applied when filing.
