Question

I am a Military member stationed in Washington with a residency in Kentucky. My spouse is a Washington resident. Will we need to file separately?

No, you do not need to file separately.

As an active duty military service member your military income is not taxable in Kentucky therefore DFAS didn't withhold state taxes. If your military income is your only Kentucky income then you are not required to file a Kentucky state tax return.

And Washington State does not have a state income tax and therefore, you will not need to file a state return.
