Oklahoma does not tax non-resident military wages. If your only source of income in Oklahoma is your military wages, you do not need to file a return.
If however, you have additional sources of income that exceed $1,000, then you would need to file a nonresident Oklahoma return.
Since your home of record is New Jersey, you should only be filing your return there unless taxes are being withheld from another state on your W-2 Form.
If you have income within Oklahoma from other sources, and you determine you have a filing requirement, there are a few steps you should ensure you complete in TurboTax to ensure your returns are prepared correctly.
First review your input in the My info section of the program.
Select Edit to the right of you name under the Personal Info summary page
Under Occupation, there is a line that says I am a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Be sure to answer Yes here.
Scroll down the page and review the answers to your questions.
Ensure your answers to the state you lived in and any other state questions are answered correctly.
Pay special attention to the line at the bottom which asks if you earned money in another state. Confirm this entry is completed for the job which is located outside the state of residence.
Once you enter this information, you should go back into the W-2 input under income.
Select Edit for this W-2 and scroll down to box 15, State & Local Taxes. Make sure your state information matches the amounts on your W-2 forms.
Then go back into the state returns starting with the nonresident return first. If you do not see your nonresident state return yet, click the Add a state and add the Oklahoma return.
Proceed through the questions. Make sure you answer the questions carefully to ensure you only report your Oklahoma source income.
Then go into the resident state form and verify the questions are answered there as well.
While answering the questions in the resident state return, you will see a screen for Credits and Taxes. When you reach this screen, locate the section titled "Credit for Taxes Paid"
Select "Taxes Paid to Another State"
Answer the questions until you reach "Other State"
Here you will select the nonresident state where you paid taxes under "Other State"
Select Continue after entering the state name.
You will then be prompted to enter the portion of income taxed by the other state
On the next screen, enter the amount of tax from the Other State
