I got out of the military in april 2017, my HOR is NC but I've been stationed and currently live in in VA. what do I do to make sure that is reflected properly?

Once you are out of the military, your Home of Record is no longer relevant to your filing status.  Therefore, you were a resident of North Carolina until you left the military and you are a resident of Virginia since that date.

You will file two Part-Year Resident returns:  One for North Carolina and one for Virginia.
