Question

I joined the military January of 2021. Do I need to mark "yes" on the member of the armed forces question in regards to my 2020 taxes?

No.   Unless you were active duty military in 2020 you do not put anything about being a member of the military on a 2020 tax return.  Next year when you prepare a 2021 return you will enter that information.
