Survivors benefits from the VA (DIC) are not taxable and do not need to be included on your tax return.

If these are survivor benefits from his military retirement (Survivor Benefit Plan) then you should get a 1099-R and will enter it into TurboTax:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the Search box on the top and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  4. TurboTax will walk you through this.

Please see Getting Your 1099-R from DFAS to get a 1099-R for Survivor Benefit Plan distribution.
