Question

My child joined the military and left for basic in September 19, 2022, does that mean she only lived with me for 9 months?

She lived with you for over half the year and a little more than 8 1/2 months.

She would be eligible to claim as a dependent as long as the other qualifications were met.

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2022 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students)
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply)
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year

A. No. While a child is doing military training, they are only considered temporarily absent form your home.  They are still considered living with you until they get their "permanent assignment.

But as other have said, they only need to have lived with you more than half the year to qualify as a "qualifying child" dependent.
