Answer Yes to the ''Served in the Armed Forces'' question.   Then select National Guard.  TurboTax will then ask whether or not he started in 2020 or if he was in the military all year (when did he enter the National Guard?).  Then it will ask about his highest pay grade in 2020 (enlisted or officer).   And finally, TurboTax will ask you whether or not he served in a combat zone.   A combat zone is any area the president of the United States designates by executive order as a combat zone (where U.S. armed forces are engaging in or have engaged in combat). The dates given in an executive order determine when an area becomes or stops being a combat zone.

As a member of the military, when filing state returns, you first need to be sure of your state of legal residence (SLR) which is usually your Home of Record. That will be your resident state.  For more information on state filing, see this Help Article.

In honor of our nation's military personnel, all enlisted active duty military and reservists can file their 2020 federal and state taxes FREE with the TurboTax Military discount.  Thank you for your service!
