NYS Sub- Code S-119

Good Afternoon, I am trying to submit taxes for my wife and I. I am active duty military, home of record is Massachusetts and therefore I pay taxes in Mass. My wife works for a company in NYC and pays taxes in NYC/the state of New York. We are currently stationed in Maryland (we live together). I am running into problems with filing our NY tax return. It prompts me to enter in the NYS Subs-Code S-119 before filing. I don't have any idea what that is, and it seems to me the only way that would be relevant is if any money other than my spouses was made in NY? The only taxed income in NY comes from my wife. What is the best way to handle this so we can file in a timely manner? Thanks!

It maybe because the New York return is trying to include your military wages.  You will need to change your information in the New York return to a nonresident.

Go back into your state interview section for New York.

    1. Under the screen that says We've Recommended a Residency Status make sure to change the residency to Nonresident.
    2. On the Military Pay screen, enter the total amount as listed in Box 1 of your W-2 as being income received while a nonresident of New York.
    3. Try running the review again.  If you still have issues after confirming the input above, please comment and we will try to troubleshoot it so you can file your returns.
