Question

Only part of my move happened in 2019. We moved over New Years so the second half of the trip was completed in 2020.

We left our old base in December and arrived at our new base in January. Do I just write off lodging and gas expenses that we paid in 2019 and only count the miles driven even though it was only half way? What happens to our expenses we paid for in 2020?

Yes, you can only deduct the Moving expenses you paid in 2019.  You will need to add the 2020 expenses on your tax return next year.
