State Taxes

Bottom line up front:  Married, filed jointly, state of residence is TX (on my les).  currently we live in NC and my wife took a job helping teach in a homeschool community.  she made around $1100 in 2019.  when we started the prep-work for filing state taxes, the program showed around $2300 in state income taxes that we owe.

Do we have to file state income taxes for her in NC?

if so, should we file separately?

I filed our federal last night, (jointly).  Does that need to be changed?

What you've done so far is correct.  File your federal taxes jointly.

Your home of record is Texas for both of you, and if they had a tax it would all be taxed there.  Now you will need to prepare a Non Resident North Carolina return for your wife.  You will have an option to show what your income was.  Your military income is not included.  Only the amount she earned in North Carolina is taxable in North Carolina.

If you are on active duty, your SLR is Texas, you are living in NC due to military orders, and your wife is in NC solely to be with you, she may choose to file as a resident of TX and her income would NOT be taxable by NC.
