Question

Why can't I add a military pay subtraction for my Maine return?

Although I checked the "active duty pay" option for my W-2, Turbo Tax does not add a subtraction for that on my State tax return and there is no option in the State return section to add this subtraction myself. Maine should refund any taxes collected on military pay when serving outside of Maine.

Yes, checking the "active duty pay" box for your W-2 is the first step.

The second step is when you get to the Maine state return:

  1. On the "We've Recommended a Maine Residency Status" screen select "Change Residency
  2. On "Change Your Maine Residency" select "Safe Harbor Resident"
  3. Continue through the questions
  4. Verify that your military pay is entered on the "Nonresident Military Compensation Subtraction" screen
