Question

Married but have been filing single for the last ten years or so

I am Married but have been separated from my husband for over 10 years, and have filing single for the years we were apart. My Husband and I are back together and I'm considering file Married jointly this year, even though, I've been filing single and pay tax for those years we were apart.  Besides setting off red flags at the IRS, can I file joint this and amend the years we were apart?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could file Jointly this year, and Amend your last three years' returns to change your Filing Status.

However, you may find that your bottom line didn't change when you switch from Single to Married Filing Separately.  If so, you wouldn't need to amend.

Hi I was wondering if you can give an update on what you did and the outcome since my sister had a similar case. Thanks
