In CA, when you claim HOH, you have to fill out a questionnaire that asks a series of questions about your qualifications for HOH.  Sometimes people answer those questions differently than they did in the Personal Info section of the turbotax program.  You can call CA and ask the specific questions that caused your denial and determine if you answered one wrong.  If so, you can send an amended questionnaire form by mail, without the rest of your return, to make a correction.  If the place where you answered wrong was actually in the Federal Personal Info section, you would have to amend both your federal and state returns.

Death or Birth

From the CA FTB website:

"If the person who you believe qualifies you as head of household is born or dies during the year, you may still be able to claim the head of household filing status. You must have provided more than half the cost of keeping up a home that was the person's main home for more than half the year. However, the requirement that the home must have been the person’s main home for more than half the year does not apply if the person was not alive for more than half the year. In that case, the home must have been the person’s main home for the period that the person was alive during the year."

You should call the phone number on the notice and explain that the qualifying person was your newborn child, assuming the child actually did live with you after coming home from the hospital  and that you met all the conditions you claimed on the fed.  Ask them how they would like you to correct your answer.

Yes, and Yes, although it's possible you could have filled the form out elsewhere and mailed it in, it's likely you just used the form in turbotax and filed it with your return.

Are you sure you qualified for HOH at the federal level that year?  Sometimes a state will catch an error before the feds do.
