After filling out the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property section we get an error on line 1 of form 8911.  On Form 8911 we have a description of the installed charger with the cost of 825. Business use and Section 179 are blank on the worksheet but Line 1 shows 825. in red.

The IRS recently clarified changes to Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. TurboTax is planning to make updates around this by February 29, 2024.

Please check back then to ensure you are eligible to receive this credit. Thank you for your patience.

    Same for me,

I have also been waiting for weeks for that form to be available in TT and the date keeps being pushed out.

Turbotax, please get your act together and update this form now. I doubt you are waiting for this form from the IRS. It has been available from the IRS Website a long time ago!

    February 21, 2024

Seriously TT??? Why is this taking so long?

    February 21, 2024

This is ridiculous that it was only brought after I paid for the filings that I was then not allowed to file. I also checked my census tract manually and know I qualify. Delaying this another week (again) when it’s been available since January is just not acceptable. I’ve been using TurboTax for over a decade but will be switching to FreeTaxUSA next year which I should have done already.

    February 22, 2024

And I will as well. FreeTaxUSA Deluxe has everything I need for next year.

TT has exhausted my patience with these multiple 1 week delays (death by a thousand cuts?). I've deleted the EV Charger from form 8911 and submitted my returns. I'll file an amended return later.

This reminds me of the TT cash grab years ago where they deleted investment coverage from the Deluxe version but didn't highlight it and then forced an upgrade to the next higher version after already having purchased the Deluxe. I'm done with Intuit.

A followup to my previous post:

I removed the EV charger from my return essentially eliminating form 8911. Reran the review. TT said "no problems found" and filed the taxes.  Incidentally, I have a 2022 solar installation credit carry over. So form 5695 is also included in my return. The IRS rejected my return almost immediately. TT's explanation for the rejection is that there's a TT problem with generating the 5695 form and it'll be fixed on 2/23. So re-answer the questions for that form after 2/23 and resubmit. My AZ return was also rejected because of the IRS rejection.

    Words fail me.

There should at least be an option to ignore the possible issue (and absolve TT of any liability of it being wrong) and let us file.  I came from years of H&R just because I saw that TT had EV handled.  Now I'm wondering if there isn't legal ramifications for this.

    February 21, 2024

Hi all, please take a minute and submit this issue to TT's customer service. They don't see or listen or hear you from here. We need to put pressure on them as customers. Ranting here only has a limited effect.

Login to TurboTax online, scroll to the bottom and click on "give feedback". Click on software issue then copy and paste the content below:

Dear TurboTax, all your customers in this nation involved in Form 8911 have been stuck and haven't been able to e-file our returns for weeks. The issue has still not been resolved and your development team keeps pushing the estimated resolving date later and later. This is unacceptable as millions of us are not getting what we paid for. Please resolve it ASAP. This is not the right way to treat your customers and this issue is damaging your brand reputation. Please forward this thread to your development and management team:

Thanks for the advice! Just submitted the feedback like 10 times!

Yes it’s red but it still allows you to transmit the form “as is” electronically.

i like my tax refund earlier than wait long so i am pressing the button.

TT is holding you off because they are populating all census tracts so they can tell you if you are in an eligible tract or not. All info is available to TT from IRS, they are just slow and careful in putting all those tracts and map to each filers address.

I checked my address on the IRS site and I am eligible so I am comfortable hitting the transmit button now.

    @TaxPert

It’s not letting me e-file, says ‘Fix error’ or file by mail. Can you please tell us if you actually e-filed with numbers in 8911 form?

    February 22, 2024

If you have the desktop version it will let you file. I just file mine will all good numbers and it went through and accepted already.

Hello, had some issue. Go to this site from 2020 Census. Put in your address where charger is installed and locate the required material.

By entering initial information on the turbo program for the ev refueling credit it will cause and error in the review by taking the user to the  8911 worksheet.  If you print out the pdf for 8911 off IRS.gov it includes a worksheet that separates personal and business entries. However the turbotax 8911 worksheet combines the two and insists on the latitude information that is ONLY needed if you are a business. It is also corrupt in that the turbotax 8911 worksheet requires a business entry for % use as a business. This is nonsense because if personal use there is no business use, but you can't enter zero. Turbotax should take a look at the IRS 8911 instructions and the included IRS worksheet to see what changes needed to be made to the program.

@hytail I'm not seeing the same issue you are seeing with the requirement to enter Lat/Lon and business entry. I was able to use address only and declare it as non-business. Maybe the form layout is causing some confusion. As you can see the % business and lat/lon are not required on mine. I've removed then entries for privacy.

I just checked my GEOID location and the US Dept of Energy parcel locator with the GEOID, and I qualify for the full refund.... took 2 mins to determine through the use of 2 websites.  Now I have to wait for TT for another 8 or 9 days to link the form into their software when I can just check a box that I qualify???  Come on TT, get with it.... Mar 1 to complete this, get real.  Most of us did the long form anyways (Sch A) so this should be a simple fix.  I am getting fed up and will be going to provide feedback on their website NOW.

    February 23, 2024

don't waste your time. see if you qualify by going to this site to get your Census Tract FIPS.....

    https://cimsprodprep.cdfifund.gov/CIMS4/apps/pn-cdfi/index.aspx#?entity=CT_2020_CDFI,[phone number removed]&center=-[removed],44.108389&level=19&visible=CT_2020_CDFI

...... and then going to this site to see if your tract is eligible. if not eligible, delete the form and file. if eligible, consider waiting to file.

    February 25, 2024

This is good advice. Because I live in a metro area and in a well-off census tract, I appear to be ineligible. This at least means I can go ahead and file my taxes.

TT certainly botched this, but the clarification came quite late from the feds.

    February 25, 2024

Following up, I ran through the EasySteps for form 8911 again today. They ask for the census tract but don't have the logic built in to detect that I am not eligible. Pretty poor performance. I'd love to get the $1000 credit, but I am essentially certain that I am right and they are wrong. Who's the professional here?

    February 23, 2024

I finally gave up and deleted form 8911 to at least get most of my refund and will just do an amended return later. Beyond frustrated with TT. This will probably be my last year on this platform.

    February 24, 2024

And now we are up to 3/2 for an availability date. Keep on them folks with your complaints.  They are tying up all our refunds!

    February 24, 2024

Maybe they should change their name to TurtleTax?

    February 24, 2024

Awesome.  Now we're stuck in the same loop.  I don't have anything constructive to contribute, but I figured I'd at least voice my displeasure after spending 3 hours entering all of our tax information to be hung up on a single form that evidently should have been fixed weeks ago.  Between price creep and broken logic, I'll very likely end my 20 year TT relationship this year (assuming I can file soon, if not this year will be my last).

For reference, TT was approximately $40-$50 to fill out forms and file federal/state taxes when I started.  This year it's $110 even though I always use a discount.
