Solution - IRS IP PIN Versus Turbo Tax PIN Turbo Tax 2024

I feel that TurboTax need to be clear and precise with their instructions with regards to IP PIN numbers, so I wrote this self-help guide helping fellow tax payers!

For you folks trying to submit your IRS tax returns and getting rejection due to incorrect IP PIN because of the difference of 6-digit pin number from IRS versus 5 digits from TurboTax message; the requirements are two different set of pin numbers. Let me be clear, these are two distinct pin numbers.

For example, the IRS PIN number is number provided by the IRS; to obtain the IRS IP PIN number point your browser to https://www.irs.gov/iden[product key removed]-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin and follow the directions and instructions in obtaining a PIN number. Conversely, you can request one from IRS via snail mail. When you have the IRS PIN number available, simple login to your TurboTax App and follow these directions:

Here's how to enter the IP PIN.

  • In TurboTax Home & Business click the personal tab. (In other versions click the Federal Taxes tab.)
  • Click "Other Tax Situations.
  • Scroll down to the section "Other Return Info."
  • Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for "Identity protection PIN." <--- Enter your IRS IP PIN number
  • Save

When you are ready to file your return online, TurboTax you will need to provide and create your own 5-digit PIN number. These numbers are arbitrary created and assigned by you. Do not confuse these numbers with the IRS IP PIN number. Don't get them mixed up, these are not apples to apples but more of apples to oranges in terms of submission.

Submit and expect acceptance email or notification from the IRS.

Happy Filing!

@ vk29

On the "signature" screen that asks for a 5-digit PIN, you can use any 5 digits of your choosing (and the screen should say that) except it can't be all zeros.  Some people use the same 5-digit PIN year after year, but it's not necessary for that signature screen.  A lot of people probably don't even save it.   You can create a new 5-digit PIN every year, if you wish.

There is also another screen that asks for your 2023 AGI to verify your return.    If you did not file a return in 2023, then one would use an AGI of 0.

I never had a problem using TurboTax for the last 10 years, until now.  I went through TurboTax, filling in the requested information, and completed my return.  Sent it to the IRS and it was rejected.  Said I was missing the AGI for my spouse.  My spouse and I file jointly, and there was no AGI for her to enter, and it wasn't asking for MY AGI.  Managed (miraculously) to contact a real live human person at TurboTax who advised me to enter "0" for her AGI.  Did that, rejected again.  Tried using her PIN from last year.  No go.  So, apparently nothing for it but to mail a hard copy to the IRS.  Yuck!  Why did Turbotax not ask for that info when I was going through the process?

Thank you for this!  Was scratching my head and completely missed the pin while going through federal.   Turbo Tax needs to do a better job of reminding you that you had a pin last year before moving forward.

Thanks for posting this. I went through this very issue with this yrs return. After 3 rejections and the second Turbo Tax rep ( she figured out that I had to input my IRS ID protection pin at the end) and walked me through obtaining one it was a relief to have my return accepted.

As someone else mentioned, your IP PIN expires on 12/31 EVERY YEAR.  So if you set up your IP PIN in October and are filing in April, you need to re-create your IP PIN on the IRS website again.  Surprisingly not hard to do.

Bless you!  My returns were rejected twice by IRS for this reason. I spent 30 minutes on a Turbotax "Help" phone call and the person had NO idea how to help me! So frustrating. Using your step by step process, I easily fixed the issue and return was accepted. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

Our 2024 tax was rejected. An IRS IP PIN is required for resubmission according to TurboTax. I just got my IRS IP PIN. Does each of my family need to get an IRS IP PIN for resubmission? Thanks.

Not necessarily.  Did the IRS send any other member of your family a CP01a letter in January stating an IP PIN was required for that filer or dependent?  Of course, you will have to use your new IP PIN that you just got.   Did you get it from your Online TurboTax account?   If so, was yours the only IP PIN listed there?

You didn't say anything about the rejection error code in regard to "whose" IP PIN was a problem.  The biggest clue to whose IP PIN is problematic comes from the rejection error code and message.    That should point you to the person whose IP PIN was being rejected.     If it said that the fault was your own IP PIN, then when you fix that and resubmit with your new IP PIN, that might solve it.   However, if it rejects again due to an IP PIN rejection, then the code and message for that rejection should likewise indicate who is having the IP PIN issue.

Here are some common IP PIN rejection error codes and who is the focus:

IND-180-01, IND-181-01  Primary taxpayer

IND-182-01, IND-183-01  Spouse

IND-995, IND-996   Dependent/qualifying person

There are some other less common IP PIN rejection error codes for some special circumstances.

Our 2024 tax was just accepted using only one IRS IP PIN I just got following your instructions. We didn't receive any letter. This is what has happened.

IND-517-02 - 'DependentSSN' in the return must not be the same as Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where Primary or Spouse have not indicated that they could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. Visit www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-theft-dependents  for additional information. To electronically file with this duplicate condition, an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) will be required. If you wish to get an IP PIN and you don't already have an account on IRS.gov, then you must register to validate your identity. Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with an IP PIN.

Thank you so much for your help!

I am royally pissed! @ INTUIT. In TurboTax Deluxe, I put in both IP PINs and YOU did not save my spouse's IP PIN, SO AGAIN, (2nd time) THE RETURNs (Federal and State) were REJECTED, and I had to pay A THIRD $$$25$$$ State filing FEE. I AM FURIOUS !!! WHEN I RAN CHECK STATUS, BEFORE FILING THE SECOND TIME, IT SAID EVERYTHING WAS CORRECT/OK !!! WRONG !!! ONE OF THE IP PINs WAS NOT RECORDED !!! THIS IS INTUIT's ERROR !!! YOUR SOFTWARE NOW COST ME NOT $80, BUT $155 !!! YOU GOUGED ME.

To others, this is a glitch in TurboTax (that existed in, at least back to 2023, in which I also had to refile). If you want to absolutely avoid fees for refiling because of the glitch, DOUBLE-check the entry. The 1st time, I was prompted for the Personal PIN but Not the IP PIN. After running (1st) "Check your Return for Accuracy", it falsely reported everything was OK, even though the IP PIN was Missing. Therefore, Do Not File the 1st run until you double-check it. (#2) Go to menu > View / Forms / Info Wks / Part VII and check the IP PIN for the 6-digit number you received directly from the IRS via mail or from the website. In order to regenerate the accuracy check, you will need to go through menu > Step-by-Step / State Taxes / Work on States / Done with States / Let's make your taxes are correct / Continue. Finish the prompts to "Good news!" and Do Not Continue to File.  Instead, go back through the routine (#2, above) again. Then you should file, unless it was missing. If it was missing, start over from the beginning and run routine #2 twice more. You can now file. Good luck, as I pray this works for everyone else. David

Sorry you had all that trouble.  This is mainly a user community forum--not a direct route to TurboTax Support.   I don't know if anyone from TurboTax will see your posting, but even if so, nothing account-specific can be handled here.  So see if you can at least get some relief the following way:

Were you charged the state efile fee multiple times due to a rejection?    You should not have to pay the state efile again after a rejection.   You can contact the folks at TurboTax Support and ask them to review your fees, and should hopefully be refunded for any extra state efile fees.

Support hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific, every day this time of year.
