This return has certain forms that can't be e-filed

I can't get Turbo Tax to e-file.  The final review doesn't show any errors.

All of the program updates are up-to-date.

It says "This return has certain forms that can't be e-filed, usually because of tax regulations, so you'll need to file by mail. For more details, select the Review tab, above, and continue through Final Review. To file by mail, select the file tab, continue and select File by Mail."

I don't want to wait for mailing it in.

what forms?  certain forms for your return may not yet be final so until they are you can't e-file. Turbotax is waiting for IRS approval so there's nothing it can do at this point. mailing your return with invalid forms may hold up your refund even more. The IRS won't open e-filing until 1/29. Submitting them now and they will just sit on Turbotax servers until that date so you can wait.

since this link for forms availability

https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product=Turbotax_online&bu=cg

for the agency box select US or state.

Thank you for your reply! I had no idea that e-filing wasn't even open until 01/29. It would've been helpful for TT to indicate that on the program. It doesn't even give any indication of which forms.  😞

I've been using TT for years now. After this year, I may rethink that decision. I don't know if they hired new programmers and got rid of the people that knew what they were doing or if all the good programmers left but this year sucks. If TT doesn't get it together, they will lose a lot of business next year.

I think the problem is with Self Employed business in my tax, I have no w2 forms, only 1099s from my employers and got this message that you mentioned here. In the beginning TT said was the QBI forms were not ready, then update came in 1/18 and QBI forms updated and at the end for e-file my taxes I cant, TT will not say which form is not ready but I am guessing TT Devs can not figure it out, and the update was incomplete ish.

I did e-filed already my sister's taxes, was only one W-2 and got accepted by The IRS already, IRS said 1/29 to start accepting taxes but they are accepting them already.

Same with my brother, I did his taxes, 2 W2s, from School district and from community college and IRS accepted his taxes already

I did not see the "message" ( This return has certain forms that can't be e-filed....) when I did e-file my sister and my brother's

I hope this help

Thanks

I completed my son's taxes, and the Federal has been accepted. However, I'm getting the same error that others have complained about. I've never received this error either, after 20 years of TT.

The issue is with Schedule C, if you add one single letter in the details of your business or name you wont be able to efile anymore only file via paper.

January 24, 2024

Still the same issue - tried to file again this morning

January 25, 2024

I’m having the same issue. I noticed it has something to do with my 1099 self employed forms because when I remove my business and only leave my W2 it seems to allow me to efile. TurboTax has really dropped the ball with all these changes this year.

Do you have a self-employed health insurance deduction? That form is not ready yet.

Here is an article you can reference that will tell you particular forms availability.

Even when I removed the SE HI deduction it still wouldn't file it...it does seem like from everyone's response here that it is related to Self-employment income, somehow...

I am having the same issue.

January 26, 2024

I’m getting this same exact message! Anyone find out any updates? I called TT this morning they claim to be unaware of this issue and have no answers.

January 26, 2024

I'm having the exact same message and the only forms I have are SSA1099, 1099int and 1098.  Always worked for me...I purchased this to efile as I have in the past.   Very disappointed.

I've had it.  No response from TurboTax!  If my filing does not e-File in a few days I'm switching to another software app.  Been using TurboTax for years, but I'm done! Looking now at H&R Block, TaxAct and others!  I'll pay for new software and will RIP TurboTax on Amazon at length.

As stated today by one of the TurboTax Moderators -

This should be resolved in today's release. The update could happen at any point today, but once the users update their software tonight or tomorrow, the issue should be resolved. Please let us know if you are still seeing this after today.

Could you please provide the link to this moderator announcement?

Every year I do a practice run through HRBlock and Turbo Tax, just to see if there's a difference.

Differences are: TT has not updated forms needed to (per EIC and CTC changes) e- file, so I'm not allowed until 1/31. Also, TT will charge me $39.95 for filing state.

HRblock- already updated and allowing to file. And free both federal and state.

I'm going with HRBlock from now on!

Can't file until January 29th. TT just needs to make that the notice when you try to file before then instead of saying something about a form.

January 29, 2024

1/29 no update and still cant e-file.

Still broken on TurboTax's end. We should be able to eFile before the 29th. Case in point - other people on this thread without Schedule C's are able to eFile through TT. Here is the note from the IRS comment that you linked to:
"Although the IRS will not officially begin accepting and processing tax returns until Jan. 29, people do not need to wait until then to work on their taxes if they're using software companies or tax professionals. For example, most software companies accept electronic submissions and then hold them until the IRS is ready to begin processing later this month."

I am also having issues filing my return. Received the same message as others. Tried multiple times and product is up to date.

My wife and I have several Schedule C business income as well as W2 wage income. Have used TT for 15+ and our tax situation has never changed. I have always filed between 1/22 - 1/26 without issue even though the IRS may not begin officially accepting returns until after a certain date, say 1/29. Like a user posted, even TT own documentation states you can submit anytime but the IRS will not OFFICIALLY start ACCEPTING refunds until 1/29.

Sad TT has not emailed users of their internal issues. A quick email just advising me they are aware of the issue and working on it would personally go a long way with me. Been a loyal TT user for a long time and like their platform but I do NOT like when companies DODGE issues and manipulate the situation. It's not acceptable and there ARE plenty of alternatives.

I have the same issue and I saw the other replies about waiting until the 29th.  I was able to efile my granddaughters return 2 days ago.  It doesn't make sense.
