This return has certain forms that can't be e-filed

I can't get Turbo Tax to e-file.  The final review doesn't show any errors.

All of the program updates are up-to-date.

It says "This return has certain forms that can't be e-filed, usually because of tax regulations, so you'll need to file by mail. For more details, select the Review tab, above, and continue through Final Review. To file by mail, select the file tab, continue and select File by Mail."

I don't want to wait for mailing it in.

what forms?  certain forms for your return may not yet be final so until they are you can't e-file. Turbotax is waiting for IRS approval so there's nothing it can do at this point. mailing your return with invalid forms may hold up your refund even more. The IRS won't open e-filing until 1/29. Submitting them now and they will just sit on Turbotax servers until that date so you can wait.

since this link for forms availability

Per the suggestions, I removed Schedule C (which removed associated forms like Self Employment tax) and then my return would efile. I was going to file a future amended return anyway, since my refund is 5 figures, so it's worth it to me to not have to wait for the bug fix. As others have said, it's inexcusable that TurboTax has this bug this late in the process. After many years with paid TurboTax Windows Desktop, I'll be looking for a new product next year.

I looked back through my forms and found a Schedule C.  I have no businesses to report but not only was there a Schedule C but it had a box checked in it.  Deleted the Schedule C form and now I can E-File.  Been using TB for many years but with all the changes that seem to be getting into my personal life...gonna rethink it for next year.

After going thru the software I found it automatically creates an empty form C.  I went in and deleted that and was able to file my return.    I had never been in the option the page showed I hadn't so basically in the code it's creating that form with no info.   Just go to C and delete everything and it fixes it.

Same here.  Talked to tech support twice and yesterday TT admitted it's a bug.  They don't have an ETA to fix but said they are waiting on some IRS forms to be updated on Jan 29 and "maybe" the  bug will be fixed with that update.  That's tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Definitely a bug in their software, just W-2s, Schedule C and that is about it, all the same forms as last years filing.

Just go in and delete Schedule C if you don't need it.  The bug is the system creates a blank one, deleting it fixes it and allows you to e-file.

Do need the schedule C and it’s not blank. Also there’s clearly more issues, spent another 2 hours on phone with TT today they don’t know what the issue is we tried many things. However the person I was talking too said she already did her taxes and had schedule C and it filed just fine. She did seem to think the form 5329  wasn’t available according to her on the irs website. Not sure because it’s never been an issue every year filing early. Guess we will see tomorrow.

Same issue, the review lists no forms with problems, so I'm perplexed by it

Somethings cannot be explained ... so patience is needed as things get worked out as they always do.

I do not have schedule c in our return but do have schedule F and i've deleted all the do not file blanks as well and still cannot efile. Yes the software is up to date as of an hour ago so thats not the issue either. I've also checked all the forms against turbotaxes is this form available to efile list and all of them are and show no delays. I am beyond frustrated!

January 29, 2024

So is there a specific time today when this should be ready. I would expect at the very least a different error message or the form that is referring to since I have done the same taxes for years and this is the first time I see this message. I printed the file to see the list of forms and all of them say they are ready for efile - what now?

January 29, 2024

I'm getting the same message. Does anyone have an answer, or fix, for this issue? I've been using Turbo Tax since 2010 and never received this error message until today.

I am on the phone going on my third hour and after talking to 4 agents and demanding resolution I got to a escalations department.  Despite what every agents has said THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE IN TURBO TAX THAT THEY ARE ACTIVELY WORKING TO UPDATE.  Because I called in and got to this person I will be getting an email letting me know that the update is available.

Finally a real answer.  I honestly hope some one else has experienced this and posted but I cant go through 9 pages of posts to find it.  Best of luck All!!!

@jrmezo Thank you for the update. Could you please post to this thread when you get confirmation that the update is available?

@vince88

Sure thing!

I have same problem. All the forms I need are ready but Turbotax says IRS isn't ready. 😞  I will try again tomorrow.
