Turbo tax won't let me file until this is fixed

I agree, it is very frustrating.

TurboTax programmers are currently implementing some recent IRS changes for reporting SEP and SIMPLE plan contributions. While there isn't an estimated date when the changes will be done, you can test this by editing your W-2 every 5-7 days to check on the status.

On January 8, 2024, the IRS released a notice describing many changes required to implement the Secure Act 2.0. If you try to enter Code S for Box 12 of your W-2, you may see this message: "We're updating how SEP and simple plan contributions are reported on the tax return based on new guidance from the IRS."

Section 601 of the Secure Act 2.0 refers specifically to Simple and SEP Roth IRAs. Code S in box 12 defines how to handle a SIMPLE plan.

These last-minute IRS (and law) changes often cause implementation delays for TurboTax and other tax processors.

Please be patient while TurboTax works to understand all the ramifications of this IRS Notice then code and test the changes. Note that the IRS is not open for e-filing until January 29th.

Its now 2/1/204 and this issue persists. Has anyone had an update?

Please try to e-file again. The issue with the SIMPLE IRA has been reported to be fixed, and as you can see, the person above you in this thread reported that they were able to e-file.

Let us know what happens.

I'm losing my patience. I'm continuing to get the same message (" blah, blah, blah, check back with us after Feb.7), but none of the issues reported in this thread apply to our situation. You all seem to be having issues with the W-2 form. In our case, my wife's W-2 reports the letter "E" in box 12, which correctly means she contributes to a 403(b), and TT seems fine with that. But I am self employed, and TT keeps highlighting the amount on line 4C (Total Traditional SEP IRA contributions) in red, even though I know  that figure is correct. Some people in this thread say they've finally been able to file and some of us still cannot. What is going on, TT? Is the issue fixed or not? Can an expert reply to this thread and shed some real light on this? In case it matters, I'm using Turbotax Home and Business. After more than 25 years, I may also bail on TT.

If you are still unable to e-file your return due to a W-2 Box 12 message, you might delete the W-2 in question. Save your return, exit TurboTax, then open your return and re-enter the W-2. Run Review to see if the issue has been resolved.

Hi, Patricia,

Thank you for reaching out to me. I followed your suggestion, but the problem is still there. To clarify, the problem  doesn't seem to have anything to do with box 12 on my wife's W-2 form at all.  Instead, it keeps coming up in line 4c on the "keogh/SEP/Simple IRA Contribution worksheet." TT put 16,252 on that line, which is definitely correct. It's MY traditional SEP IRA contribution, but TT keeps highlighting that figure in red and giving me that message about checking back after Feb. 7. I hope you can understand my frustration.  Any other ideas?

February 2, 2024

Some people are saying theirs is working now but mine is not. It gives me error and says please check back after February 7th. I need to file now.

I have the Deluxe version and there are no update and it will not let me efile.

February 3, 2024

I checked this morning and TT says I have latest updates, but I still can't get past the infamous "check back with us after Feb. 7" message. I've checked with friends who use competing products and  they haven't had this problem and don't have to wait until after Feb. 7. Also, why would the IRS have begun accepting returns back on Jan. 29 if everything on their end wasn't already up to date ?  Clearly this is SEP issue is a problem on TT's end.  I realize this is likely futile, but considering all the trouble, I think the company should provide all of us affected by this error with refunds AND still efile our returns once they resolve the issue.

February 3, 2024

I agree with the refund.    I would have been expecting my refund by the end of this week had it not been for this TT misstep.    We choose TT loyally year after year with very few issues, however I think this one should have been caught and fixed right away, so it would be a good gesture on their part to make this right.     For all of us, that buy the product early and get right on our returns, we should be compensated.

Checked again today for software update and there is none. It has been 2 weeks since the original poster posted and this is still not fixed. I have used TurboTax for years. This is the first time I have had such an issue and it is ridiculous.

I have tried the fix some said worked for them but it did not for me.

Also, why does this question indicate it is solved when it is clearly NOT!

February 7, 2024

I cannot understand why this issue is not fixed yet, especially considering I have the same "check back with us after Feb. 7" message but without the W-2 part. Mine has to do with the amount in the sep ira contribution box on the worksheet. I realize that it isn't "after" Feb. 7 yet, but this is utterly frustrating.  TT needs to get their act together. How hard can this be to fix?

February 7, 2024

Still having this issue. When is it going to be fixed? I already paid to e file and have been waiting a week for this to be fixed.

February 8, 2024

I was finally able to transmit our returns this morning. I received an automatic update once I opened the program, which then took me back to the filing section.  I clicked through all the pages and, holding my breath, I clicked on the transmit button. Voila, the return was on its way. Just for kicks I called and spoke to a customer service rep yesterday afternoon on the off chance that there was glitch unique to my situation. There wasn't, and the rep insisted the SEP issue was all on the IRS's end and there was nothing that could be done about it.  Be that as it may, I think TT's messaging could have clearer in stating that the IRS itself was completely responsible for the delay. Instead, the messaging left me with the impression that the programmers were still trying to figure out how to reconfigure TT based on the changes.  I think the company left itself open to more criticism than it otherwise would have received. I know I would have been much less angry with TT than  the IRS (which I'm always angry with anyway, considering how they rob my wallet every years). All that said, I'm likely to "return" to TT next year. Pun intended.

We would like to take a deeper dive into this message to assist you.  In order to do this, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2023" file that is experiencing this issue. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

Here are the instructions if you are using TurboTax CD/Download:

  1. Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows
  2. Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  3. Write down or send an image of your token number then place in this issue.
  4. We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.
  5. Please also tell us any states included in the return.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I have a similar problem. I have two SEP-IRAs at separate companies with RMN requirements. One is at a large investment firm, the other at a small bank. Last year I over exceeded the RMN for the large SEP-IRA to cover the smaller one and was able to file that on my 1040. I donated most but not of the RMN to charity. This year I am stuck because TurboTax desktop offers no way to report that this covered the smaller RMN as well.

I am not surprised it’s still broken this year. I am never using turbo tax again and recommend you don’t either. Free tax USA was good and easier last year. You’re not stuck just don’t get turbo tax your money.
