Turbotax 2024 will not print: STILL NOT SOLVED AT 2/2/25

I've been using Turbotax for at least a decade.  I've got a very simple return that is ready to print.  Turbotax Premier 2024 is not letting me print.  There is no problem with my Canon printer.  I can print from Excel, for example.  My iMac operating system and Turbotax says my Turbotax application is up to date.

Update 1-27-25: By the way, I have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on my machine and I have had a session open during the failed print jobs.

Update 2: 1-27-25: Is there anybody that I can escalate the question to?

Update 3:It looks like there's an [phone number removed] number.  I'll try that on Friday when I get some free time.

Update 4: eight hundred - four hundred forty-six, eight thousand, eight hundred forty-eight.

Update 5: Still NOT SOLVED.  Opened Turbotax.  Checked for program updates.  Print job seems to start normally.  Got a "boop" sound as the print window closed.  Nothing prints to my Canon printer (which prints fine to other programs).  No pdf print file created.  STILL NOT SOLVED.  Will call the 800 number this weekend to try to get help.  Apparently Intuit published defective software.

Update 6: Sunday 2/2/25: Spent an hour on the phone with the Turbotax "Help" Desk.  Determined that they could not help me.  My new best friend Sam assigned an issue number (154 26 40 868)and said he would escalate the issue to "Tier 2".

The cherry on top of the brown smelly sundae was that I almost immediately got an email saying that my case was CLOSED.  So I called back in AGAIN to Turbotax "Help" Desk to confirm that the issue was still open.  Spent another 30 minutes on the phone to confirm that the issue was still open.  Was disconnected.  Spent another 30 minutes on the phone (second try) to confirm that the issue was still open.

Found that TURBOTAX HAD IN FACT CLOSED THE ISSUE.  Asked a Turbotax "Help" Desk person to reopen the issue.  She said she couldn't do it. That only my new best friend Sam could do that.

Still Turbotax 2024 for Mac  will not print.  Vaporware.

I am having the same issue. Everything is updated and I have the full version Acrobat installed, but can only get the program to preview the returns, not print. Clicking the "Print Returns" button shows it's prepping it to print, then it makes a sound and disappears. Restarted system a few times, cleared all the caches and nothing changes.

Exactly same problem I encountered.  Have used TurboTax since 2011 with NO PROBLEMS!!  Then THIS!!  Went to the "Community" and found that many, many others have encountered the same problem, with no fix being offered by Intuit.  I found a "work around" from the "Community," and it worked, but I shouldn't have to do that, and did not have the problem in the past 9 years of returns.  Small item - It still did not print the cover sheet for the Federal return.  It did print a cover sheet for the CA state return.  Simple suggestion for Turbo Tax - Just go back to the programming that you had before.  It worked.  Following is the suggestion from the "Community":                                                                                                                                                                                                                 "Best Answer by Community

Here's a workaround I found. In TurboTax under the File menu, select Preview. A small window will open showing your return, but the only option is to Close. However, if you hover your mouse over the return, there is an open in Adobe Reader icon just to the right of the magnifying glasses. Click that and Reader opens. From there you can print."

Here is a work around a user supplied:

    maukro

FW9 (and anybody else who cannot find a way to print their returns prior to submitting them to the IRS) ...

If you haven't already done so, please try work-around as I've described it in the following Copy and Paste.

    Fellow TurboTaxers ...

I have posted the following information probably about 10 times in this one thread, and a handful of times in other threads as well. It seems to have worked for everybody so far.

I discovered it in late January by playing around with whatever TurboTax would allow me to do, print-wise, after I encountered my own Print problems.

I've been watching this thread for a week. It seems that some people can do some things in order to print ... and other people cannot do those things, but other things instead, in order to print. I do believe that the following method, while cumbersome, has worked for everybody so far. Best wishes to all!

Here's how I eventually got my 2024 Tax Return to print (Mac Desktop with TurboTax Desktop Version, HP printer)...

    1) With TurboTax open on my desktop and on the Save For Your Records tab ...

    2) I clicked on "File" from the TurboTax menu in the top menu bar ...

    3) Then I chose "Preview" at the bottom of the "File" dropdown menu ...

    4) Upon doing that, a new Preview window opened up.

    5) Ensure that "2024 Federal Tax Return" is checked on the left hand side of the new window.

    6) Choose which 2024 Tax Return forms you'd like to print. (I stuck with the default labeled "Recommended forms & worksheets."

    7) Click on the blue "Preview" button in the lower right of that same window.

:smiling_face_with_sunglasses: Another new window will open up -- this one, at least on my computer, is a very tiny version of my entire 2024 Federal Tax Return.

    9) Put your cursor over the tiny preview window (ie, over your mini-tax return). A small 4-item menu will appear (if it's not already there).

    10) Click on the little icon to the left of the download arrow. (The download arrow on the far right of that 4-item menu did not function properly for me. It would not download the preview.) The icon you should click on looks like an ink bottle in front of a square piece of paper.

    11) Now, a new window will open up in the "Preview" app. In my case, the new document that opened up had a strange document name with six letters and numbers followed by "-Unknown.pdf." I changed the document's name to my own choosing prior to taking the next step so that I could find my file after I saved it.

    12) Now, from the Preview menu in the top menu bar, Click on "File."

    13) Click on "Print" at the bottom of that "File" menu.

    14) You will now be able to Save your TurboTax return as a PDF ... and/or ... you will be able to Print your TurboTax return.

    15) Phew. That's a lot of work, TurboTax! You need to do better.

TurboTax crashes when I choose Preview. Luckily for me, I was able to move my TurboTax files to my Windows computer and print from there.

    February 12, 2025

Same issue, and I have never had this problem before.

    February 12, 2025

Another TurboTax user posted the following in the Apple Community (I quote):

[Quote] I have a MacPro early 2015 and it will only update to Monterey 12.7.6.

TurboTax wrote me: "We’ll be updating our macOS system requirements for TurboTax Desktop products

for tax year 2024. For 2024 tax returns prepared with TurboTax Desktop for Mac, macOS Ventura 13 or later will be required. At TurboTax, the security of our customers’ data is a top priority. Apple has announced they will no longer provide security updates or support for macOS Monterey 12 as of November 2024. As a result, our latest TurboTax Desktop products for Mac won't support macOS Monterey 12."

Is there anything that can be done or do I need to buy a new laptop to get Ventura 13 or later OS?

Thank you in advance for your time and attention to my inquiry. [End Quote]

Personally (me speaking now; no longer quoting someone else), back in 2022, I think it was, I did read TurboTax's warning that their new software would no longer be compatible with the older macOS's, for security reasons. I also read that my older Mac at the time could not be updated beyond the macOS I already had. Back then, I actually thought that Intuit said that TurboTax would no longer be compatible beginning with 2023 income taxes (in 2024).

Given that my Mac desktop was pretty old, and given that Apple likewise warned that it would no longer be providing security updates for my older macOS, I went ahead and bought a new Mac prior to filing my 2023 income taxes in 2024.

It turns out that either I misinterpreted the warnings that I read (ie, it appears I could have filed one more year -- 2023 -- on my older Mac) ... OR ... TurboTax decided to make one more older-Mac-compatible TurboTax program for 2023's taxes.

Anyway, this year, as people have written in that their TurboTax programs are crashing when they do various things that most us CAN do (versus using the Print button, which it most of CANNOT do), I have wondered if maybe the people whose programs are completely crashing are still using the older Mac's with macOS's that are no longer supported by Apple (security update-wise) and are therefore no longer compatible with TurboTax.

Just a wonder. Perhaps all of those people have newer Mac's and updated software, just like I do. It's striking how many problems there are this year! And many of them seem to be on Macs.

    February 12, 2025

I have the Sonoma OS and TurboTax specs says it is compatible. So I would not necessarily blame Apple.

    February 12, 2025

    I cannot print/create PDF either

    February 13, 2025

    SAME HERE!  Any resolution yet?

    February 13, 2025

I too have the same problem of unable to print my returns.  Either state returns to file or even my own fed and state for my records.  I have to think many others are having this problem (or will on or before April 15th).

Intuit needs to make this a priority.

    February 13, 2025

I just started my adult daughters's return (transferred data from 2023 return). She plans to come over to do her taxes in a couple of weeks. I wanted to make sure that this new return can be printed with the workaround posted in this discussion. First TurboTax did an update (so I was a tiny bit hopeful that they may have fixed printing problem).

Unfortunately the printing problem is still there. BUT the workaround does still work. So we will use TurboTax for her return.

That said, I plan to use something else next year. Even though I will have a new Mac by then and the program will probably work, their customer support and terrible communication is unacceptable. In fact, I just reviewed their product on Amazon and mentioned thius discussion group's problem.

    February 13, 2025

I am having the exact same issue and have been for a few weeks. It is ridiculous that no one can fix this issue. I completed another update today 2/13/25, and still it didn't help. The following is a post from someone else and I was able to get the return to print. It is not ideal, but it did work for now.

Work-around until Intuit fixes the print function.

    1)  Use the "Save to PDF" option in the "File" menu of the desktop program and save a copy of your returns to location you can easily find on your computer.

    2)  Open the PDF of your returns in your PDF reader program (acrobat, Preview, etc.) and use that program to print to your local printer.

    Worked for me.

The workaround caylar2 described above, which has been posted by bpaseno and others over the past 3 weeks, is the fastest, most straight forward workaround. It should be tried first.

It doesn’t seem to work for everybody, though, or at least it didn’t used to. Maybe it does work for everybody now? (It didn’t work for me on my first return back in January. It worked for me on my second return in February.)

If this most straight-forward Save to PDF solution doesn’t work for you, you could then try the more cumbersome workaround that I posted on this same thread. This longer, more tedious workaround seems to work for everybody other than those whose have older computers that no longer receive security updates from Apple or Microsoft, and which are therefore no longer compatible with TurboTax (and are advertised as not compatible).

    February 22, 2025

What qualifies as "older" and not supported?  And if it's an 'age' thing why is it only impacting the state forms and not fed? And why the message that SC forms are not available to print/save and sign up for notification when they are available? A sign-up that doesn't work. That message seems to imply TT is aware of the problem and just not fixing it or communicating to customers.

    February 13, 2025

Not solved as of 2-13-24. PDF not work for me. Print Active Form one of my favorites not working. great for print screen you're working on to be used as a printed crib sheet for data entry like depreciation screens. Got Print Preview to work finally. But not all schedules or worksheets etc show up in Preview. been user of MacIntax and TurboTax since 1986. Many years of issues but printing is the most basic of tasks. fix the **bleep** program. should not have to spend all our time investigating and searching for workarounds. may change to different program next year. TT wants us to use online program and e-file. More profit. I don't e-file, won't pay for my big tax return to file when I can use couple of stamps. I use Mac and desktop program of TT.  Fix the Program. Good luck to all purchasers who appear to be scammed this year. I feel your pain.

I am with you. I try to print my returns and I get the spinning beach ball. After a few seconds, I get the "boop."  I don't even get the option to print to PDF. It just stops.

    February 14, 2025

Having exactly the same problem with TurboTax 2024.  Will not print my return so I can review before filing.  Says "printing" and goes away.  2/14/25

    annieb98,

I recommend you first try this simple workaround, which was posted by bpayseno and others:

    By bpayseno

Work-around until Intuit fixes the print function.

    1)  Use the "Save to PDF" option in the "File" menu of the desktop program and save a copy of your returns to location you can easily find on your computer.

    2)  Open the PDF of your returns in your PDF reader program (acrobat, Preview, etc.) and use that program to print to your local printer.

^ That solution seems to work for most people now.

But if that doesn't work for you, then try this more cumbersome workaround, which I posted several weeks ago:

IT WORKED! Thank you for your workaround.. Turbo tax better get this fixed. That was exhausting! I thought I was going crazy, then I found this thread w/ the same issues as mine. Thank you, again!
