DEMAND TURBOTAX NOT TO DISCONTINUE CD FOR 2024 TAX YEAR

intuit turbotax has made poor decisions in the past that have been reversed, because customers would not stand for it. Discontinuing the  CD version of turbo tax will not be tolerated by many customers and it will cost turbotax more than they plan on saving. I am asking turbotax to reverse this poorly thought out decision to discontinue the CD version and only offering downloads. I personally will not purchase a download and I am sure  they lose many current and future customers, because of this decision.

Also consider the hundreds of thousands of people who are still on dial up internet and millions who are happy to get 5 mbps download speeds out of their systems. Turbotax has basically shot these people the bird and said who gives a crap about those "hillbillies" and the fact that they'll have to spend days downloading the entire program instead of installing it off a disc in 10 minutes and then only spending a few hours or a day to update. (Most of you probably never experienced the horrors of using dial-up internet).  They could probably file a class action lawsuit against all the tax software providers for discrimination against people who don't have access to decent internet. But the good news:  Turbotax has sent me a link where I can buy a genuine Turbotax disk for an extra $10 after buying a copy of the download version! https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/    I may have to buy one just to see if it is actually a base copy of the program or just a link to Turbotax.

    January 21, 2025

I am one of those "hillbilly" people who survived rather well on 3mb and before then, 115kb ISDN. Sure it was annoying, but I have other things I can do while downloading such as reading a book, whatever. If you are running on a laptop, head to a coffee shop or library to use their faster connection.

It's way past time to put this topic to rest. No one is forced to use TT, use another product, and get on with life.

    January 21, 2025

Interesting. I believe most (all?) of the people asking questions here are interested in non-sarcastic answers and information regarding TT’s latest software decision. I’m sorry you were at a “tech or streaming” disadvantage at some point in life. However it’s more helpful to focus on constructive comments as opposed to your personal history. Thanks, on behalf of all other customers as well. 😊

Rush (the band); "He knows changes aren't permanent; but change is." The question to Intuit is do we like this change?

I woke up this morning and went to amazon. Like years past I wanted to order my  CD. Like many here I could not find it except in downloadable form. I get that it's the same, but now I have to jump through too many hoops. Can't just load and go. Now I need an Intuit account, great. Another user ID, another password. You see, not all of us use the cloud, not all of us have our computers remember passwords and user Id's. We don't all have data on our phone. We don't need GPS to get to grandma's house. We still use an atlas when going on a long trip. We don't need a contacts list to find a phone number we've been calling for years. Like many of you, I looked for another program that still had a cd but couldn't find one. Then I thought, maybe I'll just do them the old fashioned way. Download the forms, send them by mail. Then I thought, maybe I'll just pay someone to do it. How would Intuit like that? Fact is, I like doing my taxes. I liked getting a turbo tax CD. Now what? So I read 20 pages of Intuit Community today, and now I'm writing this.

@VolvoGirl Who states “You'll get used to it. It will be ok.”

Like pumping my own gas? Like paying for air in my tires? Like self checking out and bagging my own groceries? Sounds like corporate talk to me. You must work there.

Oh, I see, I can pay extra for a CD, if I want millions of them to go to landfills? @taxlady28

I already pay extra to have my milk in a glass bottle,of course they give me my money back when I return the bottle. Same with bottles of Soda; I pay more, but they can be recycled. I don't like plastic. I just quit buying Nathan's pickles (even though I like them) because they just started using a plastic jar. Now I buy Claussen in a glass jar. When THEY took my Pepsi and put it in plastic. When THEY decided on plastic every thing, and then wonder why microplastics are harming animals and fish. You have to first know who the THEY are. THEY are the ones who told you, “You'll get used to it.It will be ok.”.

As for the TT CD, my local trash takes the cardboard cover and the plastic cover in my recyclables. And GreenDisk services (https://www.greendisk.com) recycles Cd's..... Of course a person has to want to do it. While we know that only about 9% of plastics even get recycled... At least I tried. Recycling, another THEY thing.

@vonpadraig “I do not understand why you have ANY difficulties importing using the DOWLOAD version.”............ It's called compassion/empathy especially for the elderly. @distoff

@xmasbaby0 who states “@dlstoff You really should read more of this thread. We have put the information here multiple times.”.... Let me understand this. Instead of buying a disk from amazon you want me to download. Then, I have to make an intuit account. The account then asks for my phone number instead of just giving me a conformation through my email which was the first box. Now, if I wander around in there (or go through pages and try to find the right hyperlink) maybe I can get my licensed code.... This is like pounding sand compared to just having a disk from the store.

So, here is my answer to Intuit. I protest. You should still make both, I don't even care if you charge more. I will download this year. But I prefer the disk myself, and would hope that you see how many people do as well. Also, I find it appalling that you need my phone number to text me a conformation, and can't just do it through the email. It certainly lacks privacy, something we barely have anymore thanks to THEY. What about people who don't get text messages?

    January 21, 2025

I live on another planet. The past few years, I've been required to login to Intuit to register my software before I've been able to use it. So has my sister who has always bought the CD version.

So, I guess you got lucky the past few years that you magically got past Intuit's licensing requirements to have an account the past few years? Congratulations.

Now, all that said, I get it, people are upset.
And we have said, REPEATEDLY, download version of desktop and CD are the same.

Contrary to what people have said, despite the 400MB of software on the CD, it ALWAYS initiated a full download anyway to do a full update. I've talked to a friend who worked in Intuit development.

AND, we have said repeatedly, you CAN purchase a CD.

Now, to the issue of CDs. Transferring to another person. Ah hah! gotcha, the download is locked to an account and you will find that with the CD. Why do software companies do that? Pirating, pure and simple.
I've noticed countless times professionals on here irate because they can't get their software from their customer. Well boohoo to the professional, go out and buy a copy, that is your responsibility as a professional. To the end user who wants to share? I feel the pain.

To the ones who have loudly professed they are unable to install previous versions of the downloads. I did a test a couple of weeks ago and SUCCESSFULLY installed 2016 to 2023. I SUCCESSFULLY opened those tax year files. AND, I SUCCESSFULLY created new files and imported information from the previous years (2015-2022) just to prove nothing was broken.

I hear a lot of belly aching. And yet, Intuit HAS provided the solution. But nobody wants to read the threads. Buy the CD after you have purchased the download and VALIDATED your purchase.

HINT, purchase from Costco or Amazon and you will probably pay less than on Intuit's site. I usually do.

Have  used the CD for about nine (9) years.   I want the CD !!

to be available.   Don't make using your product more difficult.

Keep it simple or risk losing a lot of folks.

Purchase one of the 2024 desktop download editions and you will receive a license code.

With the license code you can purchase the CD for an additional $10 on this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/

    January 28, 2025

Why not let your customers choose....I'm definitely willing to pay extra for the disc.  Have used the email download, years ago, while traveling.   Could not get through to Turbo Tax with all the issues of my unsuccessful download.  So I purchased the cd version....worked well.

    Please continue with the CD.

    January 28, 2025

Great point! Without a voice in the matter, I reluctantly purchased the 2024 (non-disk) download option. After downloading and opening the program everything looked normal. However, I then went to open my previous 2023 program in background for reference (as I’ve done for over 15 years), I was disappointed to get an error message. So I tried to open it again, same error message. I then tried to open 2022, 2021, etc,  Same error note. (Apparently no work around unless you print out your necessary documents?). So it appears you cant open multiple year programs simultaneously.  So not only did Intuit go out of their way to disappoint long term loyal customers, in addition to pocketing Millions $ by removing their disks, they’ve also have forced us to use more physical paper while overlooking a beneficial tool/option for their customers. Intuit team, please correct me if I’m wrong or if there is a “secret” password or workaround for this major issue.

    January 28, 2025

Error message regarding above issue was: 70001 “TurboTax is running under another account. Switch users and run TurboTax from the other account to continue.”

    February 2, 2025

I have used your product for over 10 years. I always purchase the CD version. Over the years I have upgraded my computer and downloaded T tax onto the new computer.  I will be looking for a different tax program. Your decision appears to be do what is best for the company not the client!

@jnev1429   No one is selling CDs anymore.

You can now buy an install CD for $10 after you buy a License Code for the version you want.  You can also burn the installation file to a CD or save to a usb flash drive.

    TurboTax® Desktop 2024-2025 | Tax Software Download

But since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).  And the download will always be up to date with all the updates.

But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior.  They only support the last 3 years.  And the License Code started in 2019.  So 2019 and newer needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code.  But they have stopped supporting 2020 and prior.  So you can’t activate 2019 and each year going forward.

    February 9, 2025

I will not purchase turbotax another year. If I cannot get the actual CD.   i have purchased it since the 1980's and if I cannot get the actual CD for 2024 then I will no longer use Turbotax

    February 9, 2025

I will not do downloads and will only use CDs. Too bad, I was a loyal customer for decades. but INTUIT isn't loyal to their customers only their greed focused management.  There are FREE alternatives to explore. Thanks

Buy the TurboTax download and get the license code - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

Then buy the CD for $10 here - https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/

Note - No other tax preparations software companies are issuing CD's.

    February 10, 2025

Ordered install disk 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't shown up.  Called customer service to see if they can give me a tracking number and they insisted that Turbotax no longer offers a CD.  Their own customer service doesn't even know what's going on.  Waited for 30 minutes to be told she did find my order number but, no they don't have a tracking number.  No other help available.

Hey.  Remember Blackberry--the most popular smartphone on the planet?  They're no longer selling phones and barely alive because they didn't care what their customers wanted. Too important and popular to fail, indeed.

I am extremely disappointed in the download version of turbo Tax Home and Business.  It does NOT carry over any of my past years return information and I have been using Turbo Tax since 2014.  I have had to recreate EVERYTHING including the square footage of my home office and have no comparison of past years to 2024 information!!

There is definitely a problem with the 2024 program.  I called and spoke with a Rep who could not HELP at all.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed and TOTALLY ANNOYED with this, as one of the reasons I have stayed with Turbo Tax is because it carries over information from year to year and that makes life a lot simpler.

I will NOT PURCHASE it another year after this total FIASCO !!!

@sjsappr The download edition does not have anything to do with not transferring the prior year tax data.

If you installed the 2024 TurboTax software on the same computer that you used for the 2023 tax return, then when you started a New 2024 tax return the software will look in the TurboTax folder within your Documents directory for any 2023 tax data file.  If none found then you need to find out where you stored the prior year tax data file.

I have used the TurboTax download software from at least tax year 2007 and every year the prior year transfers to the current tax year.  So your problem is NOT the download.

    February 25, 2025

That's OK.  I've been using TurboTax for so long, I don't even remember when I started, anymore.

This year, I couldn't even install the program onto the same computer I've used for the last 3 years.  I keep getting an error message, and it simply will not install.  Got the disk and that wasn't any help either.

Ultimately, I had to go to H&R Block - yes, I know. It's a download.  No other choice.  I know exactly where I stored my previous years data file.  It's supposed to fill in my previous years info.  Guess what - I still had to fill in half the info I never had to fill in before.  This is a frustrating year all around.

    February 27, 2025

This is nothing short of pure GREED. Seventy bucks instead of fifty and no packaging. This is the end of my Turbo Tax years.

    March 8, 2025

I have had a turbotax subscription for a few years now.   Mailed in CD.  But this year, it is Mar 8th and still no CD.   I had no idea, after checking into intuit, that they unilaterally made the decision for download only.

    BAD Intuit

@no_shi2000   If you paid for it back in November did you finally get it downloaded and installed?    You can buy an install CD for 2024 for $10 after you buy the download and a License Code
    https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021

You can burn the installation file to a CD or save to a usb flash drive. My Windows Download program is listed under Downloads and is named Windows_PC_TurboTax_Downloads.exe

Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account when you first install it, all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac) you can download it again.

In past years, you would get a CD with the program included on it.  You would sign in or create an account to get updates, which you would get when it was convenient, or when doing final checks.

Everything was on your computer, instead of cloud based.  This is the direction Intuit has gone.

After everything was finally over, for the Premier version it would cost nearly $90 with the CD.  I'm sorry, I don't care how good it is, it's not worth paying 50% more for TurboTax vs. H&R Block for the same capabilities!
